Hyundai’s Answer to the Fronx: 2026 Bayon Crossover Spied Testing

The “SUV-styled crossover” trend is officially on fire in India. After watching the Maruti Suzuki Fronx rake in massive sales numbers, Hyundai is ready to jump into the ring. Recent spy shots have confirmed that Hyundai is testing a new vehicle, codenamed BC4i CUV, which is widely believed to be the next-generation Hyundai Bayon.

Where does it fit in the lineup?

Hyundai has a very clear strategy for the Indian market. The Bayon is expected to sit in the “Goldilocks” zone—positioned right above the Exter and just below the Venue. It effectively fills the void left by the i20 Active, offering the sleekness of a hatchback with the rugged appeal and ground clearance of an SUV.

What the Spy Shots Reveal

While the test mules were heavily wrapped, several key details have emerged:

  • The Silhouette: Unlike the boxy Venue, the Bayon has a more sloping, crossover-like roofline. However, to match Indian tastes, the 2026 model appears to have a slightly more “boxy” and upright stance than the version currently sold in Europe.
  • Modern Design: Expect the signature Hyundai family look—split LED headlamps, a full-width LED DRL bar (similar to the new Creta and Verna), and sharp, geometric alloy wheels.
  • Size Matters: Globally, the Bayon is about 4.1 meters long. However, for the Indian market, Hyundai will almost certainly trim it down to under 4 meters to take advantage of B-segment tax benefits, making it a direct competitor to the Fronx and the Toyota Taisor.

Features and Tech

Being a next-generation model, the 2026 Bayon is expected to come loaded to the gills:

  • Premium Cabin: An all-new dashboard layout with a large infotainment touchscreen.
  • Smart Tech: Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, auto climate control, and rear AC vents.
  • Safety First: Potential for Level 2 ADAS, all-wheel disc brakes, and six airbags as standard.
  • The Essentials: A sunroof (a must-have for Indian buyers) and premium upholstery.

Engine and Performance

To keep it competitive with the Fronx, Hyundai will likely offer two engine choices:

  1. 1.2L Kappa Petrol: For the budget-conscious buyer.
  2. 1.0L Turbo Petrol: For those who want the “punch” to match the sporty crossover looks.

Launch and Price Expectation

The 2026 Hyundai Bayon is expected to make its debut around the 2026 festive season. In terms of pricing, it will likely be positioned aggressively, starting a bit lower than the Venue to tempt buyers away from high-end hatchbacks and mid-range crossovers.

CarBhumi’s Take

The Fronx succeeded because it offered “SUV looks” without the bulky footprint or the higher price tag of a full-blown SUV. By bringing the Bayon nameplate to India, Hyundai is looking to capture that same “lifestyle” buyer. If they can price it right and keep the features premium, the Bayon could easily become one of Hyundai’s highest-volume players.
