The Indian electric vehicle market is about to get a serious jolt of energy. While 2025 was about setting the stage, 2026 is when the heavyweights are stepping into the ring. Our homegrown champions—Tata Motors and Mahindra—are preparing a combined 7-car offensive that covers everything from budget-friendly hatchbacks to high-end luxury flagships.
If you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to go electric, this might be it. Here is the breakdown of what’s hitting the CarBhumi radar this year.
Tata Motors: The 5-Car Blitz
Tata is currently the undisputed king of EVs in India, and they aren’t planning on slowing down. They have five distinct launches lined up for 2026:

- The Icon Returns: Tata Sierra.EV The Sierra nameplate is legendary, and its electric avatar is perhaps the most anticipated SUV of the year. Built on the versatile ARGOS platform, it will feature a dual-motor AWD system and likely offer two battery options (55kWh and 65kWh). Expect it to be the “coolest” SUV in the parking lot.

- The Luxury Flagship: Tata Avinya This isn’t just an SUV; it’s a family of luxury EVs. Built on a world-class “skateboard” platform (shared with JLR technology), the Avinya will have no petrol or diesel versions. It represents Tata’s leap into the premium segment to take on global players.

- The Big Family Mover: Tata Safari.EV Borrowing its tech from the Harrier.EV, the Safari.EV will offer three rows of seating with zero emissions. If you have a large family and a love for road trips, this is your flagship.

- The Quick Refreshes: Punch.EV & Tiago.EV Facelifts
- Punch.EV: Following the design cues of its petrol sibling, expect a sharper look and more features for this compact bestseller.
- Tiago.EV: The car that made EVs accessible is getting its second update with a refreshed interior and better tech, while keeping the same reliable battery packs.

Mahindra: The “Long Range” Strategy
While Tata is focused on variety, Mahindra is focused on the “sweet spot” of performance and range.
- The 70kWh Upgrade (BE6 & XEV 9e): Mahindra’s “Born Electric” range—the BE6 and XEV 9e—currently sit between 59kWh and 79kWh batteries. This year, Mahindra will introduce a 70kWh variant for both.
- Why it matters: This battery pack claims a range of nearly 600 km per charge. It’s designed for those who want more range than the base models but don’t want to pay the full premium for the 79kWh “top-tier” version. It’s the perfect middle ground for highway cruisers.
CarBhumi’s Take
The competition is no longer just about who has an electric car; it’s about who has the best tech and the most range.
Tata is doubling down on nostalgia (Sierra) and luxury (Avinya), while Mahindra is solving range anxiety with that massive 70kWh battery. For the Indian buyer, 2026 is looking like the year where the “excuse” not to buy an EV finally disappears.
