No More Barriers: India to Launch Stop-Free Tolling at 21 Major Highway Plazas

We’ve all been there—stuck in a “FASTag lane” that isn’t fast at all, watching the barrier arm go up and down while the minutes tick away. That frustrating stop-and-go experience might soon be a thing of the past.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently shared an exciting update in the Lok Sabha: The government is rolling out barrier-free tolling at 21 key locations across India. This move aims to eliminate physical toll booths and barriers, allowing you to zip through at highway speeds while the toll is deducted automatically.

How Does Barrier-Free Tolling Actually Work?

It is important to note that this isn’t the futuristic satellite-based GPS tolling yet. Instead, it’s a smarter way of using what we already have. The system uses a combination of:

  • ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) Cameras: High-speed cameras that read your license plate as you drive past.
  • FASTag RFID Readers: These work alongside the cameras to identify your vehicle and trigger the payment.

The result? No more waiting for the person in front to find their balance or for the scanner to finally “beep.”

Where are these 21 Plazas Located?

While the project is being implemented nationwide, the Delhi-NCR region is getting a significant chunk of the action.

  • Delhi-NCR: Key spots include Kherki Daula (NH-48), Badarpur-Faridabad (NH-19), and the Bijwasan toll on the Dwarka Expressway. Work has already been awarded for the Mundka toll and Gharaunda (NH-44).
  • Major Corridors: The rollout covers the Delhi-Chennai route (8 plazas), the Srinagar-Kanyakumari route (4 plazas), and the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway.
  • Other States: Expect these smoother lanes in Rajasthan (Shahjahanpur, Daulatpura), Gujarat (Chorayasi), Tamil Nadu (Paranur, Nemili), and Karnataka.

The “Catch”: Keep Your Plates Clean!

The system relies heavily on technology, which means the responsibility shifts to the driver. If the cameras can’t read your plate because it’s dirty, damaged, or fancy (non-standard fonts), you might face issues.

Warning on Penalties: The ministry has made it clear—if your toll isn’t paid within seven days, the amount will be doubled. It is now more important than ever to keep your FASTag recharged and your number plates in standard, readable condition.

Carbhumi’s Take

This is a massive step toward making Indian highways world-class. If you’re a daily commuter on the Delhi-Gurgaon or Bengaluru-Mysuru routes, this could save you anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes of idling time every day.
