While everyone seems to be talking about SUVs, the humble sedan segment quietly held its ground as we closed out 2025. In December, sedan sales in India reached 31,985 units, marking a nearly 3% growth compared to the previous year.
However, it wasn’t a smooth ride for everyone. While the budget compact sedans are flying off the shelves, the premium mid-size segment saw some dramatic shifts. Here is the breakdown of who’s “in” and who’s “out” in the sedan world.

1. The Undisputed King: Maruti Dzire
The Maruti Dzire isn’t just a car; it’s a phenomenon. In December alone, it sold 19,072 units.
- The Stat: It accounts for over half of all sedan sales in India.
- The Trend: Its sales grew by 15% year-on-year, proving that when it comes to a reliable, fuel-efficient family car, India still trusts the Dzire above all else.

2. Compact Sedans: Aura Shines, Amaze Struggles
The battle for the second spot was intense, but Hyundai came out on top.
- Hyundai Aura: Had a fantastic month with 4,925 units sold—a massive 27% growth compared to last December. Its modern looks and CNG options continue to pull in buyers.
- Honda Amaze: On the flip side, the Amaze had a rough month. Sales dropped by over 30% to 2,575 units. With the new Amaze expected soon, it seems buyers might be waiting for the updated version.

3. Mid-Size Sedans: Virtus and City Lead the Way
For those who want more luxury and power, the mid-size segment offered some surprising results:
- Volkswagen Virtus: The “enthusiast’s favorite” is officially winning the German battle. It sold 2,378 units, growing both year-on-year and month-on-month. It’s currently the top-selling mid-size sedan in the country.
- Honda City: The legend lives on! It saw a 20% growth (943 units). While the numbers are lower than the Virtus, the City remains a solid choice for those seeking comfort and reliability.
- The Slump: Both the Skoda Slavia (711 units) and Hyundai Verna (406 units) saw steep declines of over 50%. It seems the competition from the Virtus and SUVs is hitting these two hard.

4. EVs and Premium Luxury
- Tata Tigor / EV: Sold 775 units. While it’s down compared to last year, it saw a huge month-on-month recovery (up 58%). It remains the go-to entry-level electric sedan for city use.
- Toyota Camry: In the luxury space, the Camry is a quiet hero. It more than doubled its sales to 200 units, proving there is still a strong niche for premium hybrid luxury.
The Final Sales Tally (Dec 2025)

CarBhumi’s Take:
The December numbers tell a clear story: India loves value. The Dzire and Aura are carrying the segment on their shoulders. However, the success of the Volkswagen Virtus shows that if you offer a car that looks good and drives better, enthusiasts will still choose a sedan over an SUV.
Are you surprised to see the Verna and Slavia numbers drop so low? Or are you a die-hard sedan fan waiting for the next big launch? Let’s chat in the comments!
