VinFast to Launch India-Specific Electric Scooters in 2026

The Indian electric vehicle landscape is about to get a major new player. Vietnamese EV giant VinFast has confirmed plans to launch its electric scooter lineup in India during the second half of 2026. While the company initially made headlines for its upcoming electric cars, it is now clear that they intend to capture a significant share of the high-volume two-wheeler segment as well.

Massive Manufacturing Scale

Unlike many new entrants that start small, VinFast is betting big on local production. The company is setting up a massive manufacturing hub in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. While their car plant is designed for 1.5 lakh units, the two-wheeler assembly line is being built to handle a staggering capacity of 1 million units per year. This massive scale suggests that VinFast is positioning itself to be a leader in the Electric Vehicles segment in India.

Tailored for Indian Conditions

VinFast Asia CEO, Pham Sanh Chau, has emphasized that these will not be mere global imports. The scooters will be “India-specific,” designed to withstand the country’s unique weather conditions, road infrastructure, and the high price sensitivity of local buyers.

To keep prices competitive, VinFast is working closely with Indian vendors to source critical components like battery packs and motors locally. This strategy is similar to what we see with other Upcoming Scooters in India, where localization is key to qualifying for government subsidies like the PM E-DRIVE scheme.

The Competitive Landscape

When these scooters arrive in late 2026, they will enter a crowded field. VinFast will be going head-to-head with established giants. By timing the launch for the second half of 2026, VinFast likely aims to capitalize on the festive season, a period that traditionally sees the highest vehicle sales in India.
