VinFast Hits 1,000 EV Sales in India — and Quickly Rises to Top 4!

Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast has achieved an impressive milestone in India — selling over 1,000 electric cars in just about four months since its market debut in September 2025. This rapid uptake has helped it become the fourth-largest EV brand in India by cumulative sales, trailing only established names like Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor, and Mahindra Electric.

📈 How It Happened

  • Launch & Sales Growth: VinFast entered the Indian market with two models: the VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs. Together, these have powered its early success — selling about 830 units between September and December 2025, and then over 200 more in the first weeks of 2026.
  • December Momentum: In December alone, VinFast sold around 375 units, outperforming big international brands like Hyundai, Kia, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz despite offering just two models at launch.

🚙 About the VF6 and VF7

  • VF6: A compact electric SUV designed for city-friendly driving and everyday use.
  • VF7: A mid-size electric SUV with more space and features suited for families and longer trips.
  • Price Range: Both SUVs sit in the ₹16 lakh – ₹25 lakh segment, which is currently one of the most active and popular price bands for EV buyers in India.

🛠 Local Strategy & Support Infrastructure

One of the keys to VinFast’s early traction has been its local manufacturing strategy:

  • The company operates an EV assembly plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, with an initial annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles, scalable up to 150,000. Local production helps keep prices competitive compared with imported EVs, which face higher taxes.

VinFast has also worked quickly to build a sales and service ecosystem across the country:

  • 25+ dealerships and 80+ service centres opened within the first few months.

These efforts help reassure buyers about ownership support, charging options, and reliability — factors that are especially important when choosing a new brand.

🔌 The Bigger EV Picture in India

VinFast’s milestone comes as India’s electric car market grows rapidly: total annual EV sales jumped from around 82,000 units in 2023 to roughly 1.76 lakh units in 2025. But despite this growth, sales are still dominated by a few established players, making VinFast’s entry and fast rise quite noteworthy.

🏁 What This Means

VinFast’s early success shows that new EV brands can find traction in India — especially with the right combination of pricing, local production, and infrastructure support. Its climb to 4th place in EV sales rankings also signals growing consumer confidence in international EV offerings.

However, the Indian EV market remains highly competitive, and VinFast will need to sustain momentum through reliability, customer experience, and further product launches to keep growing in the long term.

The VinFast VF3 is a compact electric micro-SUV designed mainly for city driving. It’s small, easy to park, and ideal for short daily trips in towns and cities. Powered by a rear-mounted electric motor with about 43.5 PS and 110 Nm of torque and an 18.64 kWh battery, it delivers a claimed range of around 200–215 km on a single charge — enough for everyday commuting. It can fast-charge from roughly 10 % to 70 % in about 36 minutes. The VF3 typically seats four people, includes a 10-inch touchscreen, and is expected to be priced around ₹7.5 – ₹10 lakh if launched in India in early 2026.
